Natural Burley Tobacco
Burley is the second only to Virginia in popularity and is famed for its use as a blending tobacco. Burley is light brown in colour, and air cured and Burley has a much lower sugar content than Virginia.
The air curing process is done in large open barns, where the freshly cut leaves are tied together and hung upside down to dry from the natural air flow through the barn. The drying process can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 12 weeks depending on factors such as local climate and humidity.
Once the leaves have aged properly, they are sorted based upon their appearance and overall quality. During this process, the leaves are continually moistened and handled carefully to ensure each leaf is best used according to its individual qualities. The leaf will continue to be baled, inspected, un-baled, re-inspected and baled again repeatedly as it continues the ageing cycle.
We then hand-select the best leaves from three different Burley varieties, combining them for Drake’s Burley’s distinctive taste.
Organically Grown In Spain
Our Burley Tobacco leaf varieties are grown at three family-owned farms in the Extremadura region of Spain, famed for their tobacco-growing heritage. Spain is the 3rd largest tobacco producer in Europe and 90% is grown in the Extremadura region.
Cold Extraction Process
After leaf selection, our master blenders cold macerate the tobacco leaf blend for between 5-9 weeks, stirring them daily to ensure a full-bodied flavour.
We then use an 8 stage natural filtration process to remove all the tobacco leaf from the final liquid concentrate.
