]]>The Orion II Vape Kit from LVE - quality and thought has gone into the vape kit.
This is most defo no cheap POD system, from the very minute you see the box - the whole thing screams quality. The front of the box has a frankly unnecessary moving holographic image on the front that is nonetheless as cool as a cucumber, and the inside of the box and layout etc absolutely says that someone has put some real time and love into the development and overall finish of this product. It has an almost “Apple” feel about it - if Apple were less minimalist.
]]>Orion II by LVE (formerly Lost Vape) - Initial Thoughts
I received an LVE Orion 2 (FOC) for testing yesterday from the legendary Rob @ Stealthvape.
To be honest POD kits etc are starting to grate on me a little (not that this is really a traditional POD kit at all) - don’t get me wrong, the Caliburn etc are great devices .. especially the Caliburn AK2 - however, they have now bought out an AK3 .. and you guessed it - it takes a different POD shape, and this - the constant need to buy a new type of Pod or coil, i’m finding annoying, possibly because I come from a re-buildables background - and am not a huge fan of stock coils in the first place - it always seems geared towards locking people in, especially when they start altering the shapes and not making use of backwards compatibility.
Anyway .. enough of my opinions - presumably you here to find out my thoughts on the Orion II, I will start out by being totally honest, Rob asked if we wanted to stock them, and I was “meh - not sure, we don’t sell a lot of hardware anyway, and as per the above - I’m becoming a little fatigued with POD system manufacturers and their lack of backwards compatibility” - To which he said, no no - this isn’t like that, Ill send you one to try, you will open it and love it.
Turns out …. He was right. At least in the first instance
In the Kit you get a The Orion II itself with a POD/Tank attached, two coils (0.4 Orion II Coils - for DTL - so if you are an MTL Vaper like me , you are also going to need to get a pack of 0.8 MTL Orion II coils), a spare “tank/POD” I have not made my mind up yet wether its more tank or POD, a USB-2 charging cable (YAY!) an instruction manual, a Welcome Card about LVE and a small rubber sucker to remove the interchangeable panel covers.
The device itself is capable of both DTL and MTL - this in the past has traditionally been a massive warning flag for me - it used to be devices that did both were generally rubbish at MTL (In my experience) - that has been changing recently - and this is a great example of something more than capable of both - and without the added annoyance of airflow pins etc.
The power range is 5w - 40w - more than enough for most, and it sports a huge 1500mHa Internal battery .. nearly 3 times that of most cheap POD systems. The Orion II has a reassuring weighty feel and feels extremely solid, not at all plasticy or cheap feeling. Mine is a Gold Frame with the “Purple Heart” wood panels - and Rob kindly sent me some different coloured panels - which I have changed for a lighter browner wood. The whole thing just screams of something that two or three years ago would cost in excess of £100 - but this weighs in at £49.99 … and from the minute you first hold it - you know its going to outlast any £20 Pod system.
I am no DTL Vaper - so have not tried the 0.4Ohm Coils … Though I will at some point, but the 0.8Ohm coils have a great flavour reproduction at both its recommended 12watts (which it automatically switches to on MTL coil insertion - all the way unto a heady 15watts! and with the airflow dialled down it is actually a really nice MTL experience - at least for my preferences.
The board in the device as mentioned above auto senses the coil type and adjusts the wattage accordingly, you are of course then free to adjust it yourself after for your preferences.
Feel wise - the device as a nice heft to it for its size, which adds to the feeling of quality has a small TFT screen with all the relevant information a USB 2 charging port and Up and down buttons. Various button combinations will do different things such as locking the power etc .. and five quick fire presses will turn the device on and off.
The different finished panels made from either different forms of carbon or responsibly sourced exotic woods are a very nice touch, not normally something that bothers me .. I have three different wood types on my desk and cant make up my mind which I like most.
The top fill without having to remove the POD/Tank is very nice and handy and the juice level is very clearly visible - despite the smoked finish to the POD/Tank.
The Airflow ring is easy to use to dial to your preferred airflow - and sits very nicely in the lines of the device.
Removal of the POD/Tank is via a sliding switch which locks it into place - thereby avoiding the reach into pocket and pull the POD off the top of the mod common in cheap Pod systems.
After a day of use - I have had no condensation issues - and still have plenty of battery left - and I didn’t even charge it out the box.
The Coil to main body connection is kind of - separate to the top of the mod itself - and Although I cannot confirm this - looks to be designed to contain any leaks (which I doubt you will have) from the rest of the device.
Putting the POD/Tank back into place come with a satisfying and reassuringly solid click … no lost tanks here.
All in all after one day of use - I am I have to say impressed with the device .. I would probably like another!
However time is the biggest test - and I will keep this Blog Post updated with anything I find.
Also : There are whispers of a rebuildable bridge - if that did happen, and it was good for MTL and DTL - it would make this device a Solid contender to appeal to almost ANY Vaper. I hope it does, it would set an already great device in this price bracket way ahead of the competition and more appealing to a much wider array of vapers.
Conclusion : SO far - freaking awesome.
Juices used for testing : Gran Corona (a really clean burning juice) and Dairy Divergent - Caramel Kiss (one a bit more likely to clog up in a stock coil) neither coil is showing any sign of going down yet - which It shouldn’t! Although some pod kits I have tried recently have not faired so well with heavier juices.
]]>Both of these great little vape POD kits have for's and against's - these are my thoughts and opinions after several weeks of using both PODS heavily.
Spoiler : both are a much better option than a disposable vape!
]]>The latest two are the Uwell Caliburn AK2 Pod Kit and the Uwell Caliburn GK2 Pod kit, but which is better ? or do they both have a place?
Well this is an opinion piece based on several weeks now of using both kits, and spoiler alert they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
I personally started using the AK2 kit a few months ago when we first got them in as I was looking for something light and easy to carry on my Motorbike. Until recently I have been largely underwhelmed by POD kits (although I see and understand their attraction) being a long term rebuildable atomiser user.
The AK2 surprised me with its rendering of flavour - far superior to any POD kit I had tried before (although clearly I am no POD aficionado) - and to me flavour is everything, I quickly became accustomed to not having the weight and extra batteries / emergency wicking kit carry arounds I have been used to for the last 10 years or so, and they became a firm favourite. I was very surprised at the length of time the pods lasted as well (possibly the mesh) compared to stock coil tanks I have tried in the past, and I have a tendency as a tobacco fan to use some fairly heavy juices - although the leaf range which I have been on recently is kinda ideal for pod kits because its really not that heavy on the coils.
This was it I thought ... holidays sorted - going out sorted - then they bought out the GK2 Pod kit ... annoyingly this is one of the things I do not like about POD kits, the constant updating and need to buy different replaceable coils.
So .. My initial thoughts were "Nope, not playing - i will stick to the AK2"
However, having noted that the Caliburn GK2 also uses replaceable coils as well as PODS, thereby being a bit more earth friendly than the AK2 Pods by dint of the PODs themselves being infinitely re-usable (you can just change the coils) - it appealed to my greener side enough for me to warrant giving it a go. Also, the PODs have adjustable airflow .. also a bonus as Im very fussy about draw strength,
I set the GK2 up initially with the included 1ohm mesh coil - and to be honest I found this somewhat underwhelming, Initially I wondered if this was possibly because I have become accustomed to the 0.9Ohm coils of the Ak2, although what difference 0.1Ohm i'm not sure! Now I believe it is the extra "step" not having a coil that is not directly integrated into the POD makes. I have come to this conclusion because I swapped it out for the 0.8Ohm coil and this was a great improvement.
The GK2 device itself does feel more robust than the AK2, it is very slightly taller and also wider, but both devices are really tiny, so I don't think is really an issue either way. It for sure has a better battery life which is a definite box tick for the GK2.
Do I have a favourite out of these devices? Im not sure I do per se, Im quite happy with both of them in my pocket. Both devices have really great flavour with the AK2 perhaps marginally pipping the GK2, Both devices are tiny - with the GK2 being very slightly larger. Both devices charge by USB-C will get a full charge in or around 20 minutes. The GK2 has a noticeably better battery life and replaceable coils - making pod waste a thing of the past, and it is for this reason I think that the next time I need a device like this I will probably go for the GK2, although if all that was available at the time was the AK2 - it would not be a deal breaker and I would happily pick that up instead.
Tip: when you are going to be out for awhile with these (or any other pod system) as your main devices, consider purchasing a power pack and take the correct charging lead with you (USB-C in the case of both of these devices). They both charge from flat to full in or around 20 minutes .. meaning you can keep topped up for as long as your power pack holds out - I use a 20000 mAh one from Amazon .. and it will charge them many many times over.
On top of that both of these items are equally preferable as an Alternative to the current slew of Disposable vapes out there ... but I'm guessing you all are starting to get my opinion on those particular items ...
You can find both of these devices from the links below.

]]>It would be so easy to capitulate, and join in .. certainly we would make a lot more money and attract a lot more customers, but - I am so actually down on these things, there is not a chance of capitulation, I stand by my thoughts that they are ruining the industry - hugely self destructive. Thats why we prefer these disposable vape alternatives.
To recap : They have a negative effect on the environment, they are for the first time in the industries history actually being adopted by under age vapers and school children - this is not a good look for the industry as a whole. The litter from them and the visual impact of school kids walking home puffing on them is plain for all to see. Read more here on why will not get involved - Disposable vapes and why we say no.
So with that in mind - we are trying to stock up on a few disposable vape alternatives - and I do realise largely as Manabush users - who tend as a rule to be long term seasoned vapers - that I'm preaching to the choir here, but who doesn't love their own echo chamber?
But it is we - the long term seasoned vapers that can help to an extent guide the disposable user onto something a little more worthwhile and less morally ambiguous for their pocket and the planet.
with that in mind - Im trying to stock a few choice bits and bobs that should appeal to that easy to use throwaway/but not throwaway nature.
In truth - Pods have always left me a little cold - I've never found them to have much flavour and .. oompf next to a proper mod and rebuildable atomiser like device.
My opinion is changing though - the more recent additions to the POD / Starter Vape kit stable have actually been pretty darn good - if you sort through the chaff.
Heres my personal choice for Disposable Vape Alternatives :
The Caliburn GK2 by Uwell
Straight in at number one - and JUST knocking the Caliburn AK2 Pod kit off the top spot is the Caliburn GK2 by Uwell (Uwell do seem to have the upper hand with these devices).
This device actually uses replaceable coils as well as Pods (empty pods are also available) - giving it more the feel of a proper stock coil tank - but in a small easy to carry POD style - its got some funky graphics and lights as well!
The Caliburn GK2 POD kit by Uwell
The Caliburn AK2 By Uwell
My Previous favourite - and still a top contender, straight forward Pods here - no stock coils - but the flavour is still as good as the above (which is awesome) and absolutely tiny. I feel the GK2 just pips this device because of its changabel coil nature .. thereby being slightly greener.

Why make my own Coils?
This skill is really the first stepping stone to rebuildable atomiser greatness - and in terms of MTL atomisers and tanks may very well be the only skill you need to reduce your coil outlay from £100-£300 pounds a year to about a Fiver!
]]>This skill is really the first stepping stone to rebuildable atomiser greatness - and in terms of MTL atomisers and tanks may very well be the only skill you need to reduce your coil outlay from £100-£300 pounds a year to about a Fiver!
If wrapping your own coils difficult for you - maybe you have a disability that makes it difficult, or if you just find it too much hassle, fear not you can always use pre-made coils for RTA’s - and still not take your yearly costs above a tenner.
If you are going to stick at it and make your own coils - you will be rewarded. There is no better flavour than a rebuildable Atomiser and your own tailored coil.
This is one of those piece of string moments :) - it depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go - but for the sake of simple round wire MTL coils, the minimum you need is a Screwdriver (with a shaft the width you want your coils), something to cut the wire with (clippers or old scissors at the most basic) and some wire.
You can make your life easier however with a coil Jig - the most basic of which (and which I use personally for making these types of coils) - is a just a rod sectioned into different widths - for different sized coil diameters. This will replace the screwdriver, and is also very useful for placing the coil in the atomiser. A pair of wire cutters will make life easier as well.
If you really want to travel top banana - a good coiling kit is always a good thing, and will contain all the tools you are ever likely to need. We sell two which I highly recommend if you are going to stick at making your own coils - The Coil Master V3 rebuildable kit and the Coil Master DIY Mini kit v2 - these kits contain all the tools you will need not only for making the coil - but for placing it in the atomiser and dealing with the cotton as well - the Big V3 Coil master kit even has a winding tool if you cant get on with the first more basic method I’m going to describe and an invaluable Building deck that will read the final ohms of your coil and even fire it up to check it.
Enough sales pitch! - onto the builds.
I’ll start with the coiling rod method.
I’m going to wrap a simple 2.5mm internal diameter round wire coil (this is my standard coil for all MTL tanks), in all of the following scenarios.
Note : it is always worth using Steam Engine before you get to know what you are doing to work out Ohms of any given wore and diameter - https://www.steam-engine.org/coil.
Start by holding the coil rod in your left hand (reverse if you are a south paw) and place the wire (for staters) over the top of the 2.5mm section of rod holding the wire tight with your thumb of your left hand - you will use the right hand to wind the wire around the coil - I am using 28AWG (.32mm) Nichrome wire here - and will do 6wraps to get a coils somewhere around 0.8Ohms - my preferred Ohms in an MTL tank.
I count the coils from the top as I look down .. as most of the atomisers I use require the coil “legs” (the bits that stick out) to be opposing I count six wraps and then continue to coil the wire till it faces in the opposite direction to the one under your left thumb.
When I have finished the coil I like to compress the coils downward to make the coil a bit neater - at this stage do not worry if the coil is a bit untidy, that can be manipulated once inserted into the atomiser (in the next tutorial)
Note : it was harder than expected to do this though a camera! not the neatest coil I've ever done, also - I bite my nails, hence the gloves.
Method Two : 2.5mm Screw Driver
No Coil Rod or Jig? Want to rough it? Out and about with only basic tools? A 2.5mm screwdriver is your friend! And to be honest the instructions for using this are EXACTLY the same as the coil jig above … it can also be used to place the coil in the atomiser, but the handle width of a screw driver can get in the way sometimes.
See Easy - the only difference between this and the coil Rod method above .. is if you have a coil rod or not …
Method Three : Coil Jig
These are great if you want to make a super tidy coil, or if you have poor eyesight, or for some disabilities. From my perspective who can still just about see enough to hand wind around a rod or screw driver, I actually find them slightly more faff than the above methods - but for the less able - and beginners they can make life so much easier.
All Jigs differ slightly - but most follow the same principle of using a mounted rod with a cap on with a small sticking out bit that winds the coil around the rod as you turn it.
The Jig I am using is the Coil Master one from the V3 Kit mentioned above - that comes with a variety of rod sizes and caps to suit different wire gauges and coil diameters.
Again I am choosing a 2.5mm Internal Diameter coil with Stealthvape Nichrome at 38AWG (0.32mm) wire.
Setting up the Jig
Choose the 2.5mm Rod from the Rod pack, then unscrew the cap of the Jig handle and place the rod fat side down in the space in the handle top, then replace the cap.
Hold the wire against the side of the handle with your left hand (there are slots and holes in the jig you can use to do this - I prefer to just hold it). Rest the wire over the top of the coil rod agains the base of the handle.
Put the appropriate Coil top on (in this case the 2.5mm Top), Push the top down and make sure the wire is caught behind the small screw that sicks out (when looking from the top).
Start to turn the coil cap in an away from you - counting the times you are turning the cap, do not press down on the cap .. you will end up coiling over the last coil! Just light pressure or even move it slightly out each time you make a revolution.
Once you have made the required amount of coils (in this case 6) continue on slightly to get opposing legs.
Remove the cap - you should have a pretty neat coil now ready to install in an atomiser.
Easy! .. keep practising with whichever is your chosen method you will soon get it - and soon be able to save money by making your own coils!
Next - Installing your coil in an Atomiser.

Looking around now at the vast amount of vaping equipment available on the market - from starter kits and Pods to high end rebuildable devices, there is a device to suit everyone out there, and a use and legitimate reason for each and everyone of those device types.
For instance, you are going on a long train journey with a work meeting at the end. There is not going to be a great deal of time to stop and get out your huge dual battery mod with re-buildable device on the top - and maybe you also don’t want to be seen by your work peers with such a device - this is a perfect situation for a small discrete POD system.
On the other hand your everyday main device - to my mind needs to be something that gives you the best flavour and nicotine delivery (especially for a newer switcher from smoking - things like this really make a difference for the terminally tobacco addicted) - and while there are a lot of good stock coil atomisers and even some PODS out there they come with a cost, and you know health reasons aside, one of the reasons a lot of people stop smoking is the cost. Who wants to replace one expensive habit with another?
Enter the Rebuildable Atomiser or Rebuildable Tank if you prefer.
These items are nothing new - in fact if you started vaping any more than three or four years ago, if you wanted any kind of spot on flavour at all rebuildables were pretty much the only way to do it. Sure stock coil tanks were available and they were pretty good (situation - great for a night out) but none of them could touch the flavour and above all running cost of a good rebuildable.
For me personally that still holds true today, and with even inexpensive (£5-£10) for a pack of five type coils (which won’t give as good a flavour as a rebuildable as a general rule) - a good sweet juice is still gonna have you crowing through that pack of coils in short order.
On top of that (and I have outlined this before in THIS blog post) in this day and age - as we become more aware of climate change and global warming - and our waste impact on the planet, there is something to be said for keeping vape waste to as much of a minimum as possible.
Actually I don’t think stock coils are too bad waste wise, made from metal and cotton - and maybe a small amount of rubber - their impact is nothing like the waste from a plastic POD in landfill or even worse, a disposable POD complete with Lithium battery! I know they are popular - but I really cant get my head around that! - just seems so .. antithetical to everything we are being told.
Climate rant aside - lets make a comparative very rough cost analysis of running PODS, stock Coils and rebuildables.
So lets say you are a heavy Vaper (hey most of us are!) and .. well your on the Manabush site - so lets say you like a sweet tobacco juice.
In a POD - frankly you are not getting more than 3 days out of a POD - sure some of you may stretch to a week … but are you enjoying those last 2 or 3 days ?
Stock coils .. you are gonna get nearer a week to 10 days - so thats a bonus .. though I suspect its getting a bit chewy towards the end of the 10 days.
Rebuildables .. well you could if you wished stretch it to the time of a stock coil - but why would you ? All you have to do is pull the cotton out .. dry burn the coil gently rinse it under the tap pulse it again to dry it off and stick a new bit of cotton in. 5 minutes max.
So costs wise :
Lets take some of the popular systems and work it out that way. - I will mention no names.
Pods Price average - £8 - £15 for 4 pods
Stock coils price average - 5 pack .. around a tenner.
Rebuildable supplies :
Roll Of wire : around three quid for about 10 meters - that is a LOT of coils
Cotton - varies hugely, but lets say roughly £2 - £3 (I use Muji - thats about 7 quid for a bag that has lasted me nearly 4 years)
If you do not want to roll your own coils … a pack of pre wound coils is around 3.99 for 10.
So to me I work that out as - if you are vaping hypothetically vaping the one flavour that lasts as above and without the cost of the juice.
PODS - roughly £3.24 every 3 to five days - lets be generous and say 5 - so 65p a day - £4.55 a week.
Stock Coils - lets say a week .. so at 8.99 a pack fo five - £1.79 a week - a big improvement on the PODS
Rebuildables - this could be tricky I generally use 10cm to 12cm of wire per coil (there is a bit of waste .. so for ease .. lets say 10 and call it 3 quid for 10 meters. Thats a hundred coils out of a 10meter roll. So 0.03p per coil - cotton - I use Muji … lets use our Japanese cotton - which is 0.70p a bag .. five sheets - I can get around 12 coils out of a sheet (I’ve long perfected the art of making it go far - split it … save the ends) - it works out just over a penny per wick.
So each wick and coil costs : 4p - I can get (lets say I’m being really fussy about flavour) - 3 days out of that bit of cotton and coil. HOWEVER - the coil is not immediately disposable .. I can dry burn and reuse that coil without taking it out of the atomiser a load of times - at least 10 .. but lest say 5 to be generous (I know people who NEVER change them) - this would make the coils value per lifespan 0.006p per re- wick .. over a week if you did it twice that is 1.2p
So if you are building your own coils - thats makes it 1.2p plus 2p of cotton (1p per wick)
3.2p per week thats Three point two pence per week !
Out of interest - if you are using pre wound coils in your rebuildable - lets see what that would be - 3.99 a pack of 10 (which you can dry burn and reuse as above) = so 40p each as near as dammit. Using the same shoddy method I used above to work how much that come to a re-wick … 8p per re-wick. + 2p of cotton
Ten Pence a week! Still a HUGE saving.
On top of that .. the flavour is almost ALWAYS better.
In conclusion then ( I realise the above idiot based mathematics was getting a bit hard to follow)
Pods per week : £4.55 - £236.6 a year
Stock Coils per week : £1.79 - £93.08 a year
Rebuildable (wind your own) : 4.2p per week - £2.19 a year
Rebuildable (Pre wound) - 10p per week. - £5.20 a year
The numbers are quite staggering ...
When you add to these huge savings better flavour and less landfill waste - it all seems a no brainer to me.
Do bear in mind this was a hypothetical situation - and it will vary with juice, usage , different pod, coil types etc. This was based on MTL vaping, but although scaled up - I suspect the same level of cost savings would be achieved with DTL vaping.
So with that in mind - I am moved to encourage as many people as possible to swap to Rebuildable Vape Tanks - its a revelation once you do. Keep your eyes on this section, We will be making tutorials etc to help those who want to make the transition.
]]>Coffee! I love it, Espresso, Latte, Cappuccino, Flat White, Cortado - you name the Coffee style and I’m a fan.
]]>I'm pretty into different coffee origins as well; my favourite is Hawaiian Kona, which is a massive treat because it is more than a little expensive. Monsooned Malaba is another style I’m particularly fond of. Suppose you have never delved into different coffees and their drastically different flavours. In that case, I highly recommend you take a trip to The Coffee Bean Shop and pick up some samples if you enjoy this holiest of beverages. Try pairing them with your vapes; it's pretty rewarding.
But what is the place of coffee in the Vaping world? Is it alongside a good vape, or is it in the vape (coffee e-liquid flavourings obviously - not actual coffee .. that would be dangerous!)
A few years ago, I would have said no; Coffee flavours were entirely.. essential - they were all a bit like a coffee-flavoured sweet rather than a proper coffee, but flavouring technology has moved on to such an extent that these days there are some damn realistic coffee flavours out there, from espressos and cappuccinos to Coffee Liqueurs and Coffee Cake.
It will not be long; it is probably already possible to re-create the tastes of individual coffee estates like Monsooned Malabar, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and my exulted Hawaiian Kona. This is a day I look forward to - and If I can find it … I will most definitely create Coffee E-liquids re-creating those flavours.
As it stands at the minute, The difference is “limited” (and I use that term loosely because it is pretty clever) to Latte, Cappuccino, etc - as in different coffee cups rather than other types of coffee. Still, some genuine Coffee E-liquid gems exist for those with the coffee bug.
For my tastes, unsurprisingly, I like a tobacco and Coffee mix; when I from Druid's Brew created the Kona Paka E-liquid - the richness of the Tamahaac tobacco bought out the richness in our chosen coffee flavour that reminded both of Hawaiian Kona - hence the name. This quickly became my favourite E-liquid, turning me on to Coffee Tobacco E-liquids.
There is an absolute array of Coffee E-liquids out there now, both with and Sans Tobacco, in 10ml TPD Coffee E-liquid form and Coffee Shortfills like these - 50ml Coffee Shortfills. The Milky style Coffees available now are really quite good; I’m finding myself quite the fan of our own Mocha Latte (the Vegan Option! Coconut milk based!)
It doesn’t stop there, though … It's not just Coffee - Coffee Liqueurs have become good over the years; you are not left out for those fans of Irish cream, Kahlua and Borghetti.
Those of you who have been around for a few years will probably know that Manabush has been working on a coffee tobacco e-liquid flavour for years but, until recently, has never settled on a finished product. Experiments have spawned “Mash” in the Spiritwalker reborn range (a Caramel, Biscuit, Coffee Liqueur Espresso and Cream Vape Juice), and we are on the cusp of finally releasing a Nokomis-based one in the Tribute range. For those curious about Mash, we derived it from the word Muckadaymashkeekiwabu - which is Ojibwe/Chippewa Native American for Coffee - more correctly, Black Medicine water.
Is there a Coffee flavour you would like to see?
Reply in the comments below, and you never know - we might have a pop!
]]>I have seen a few posts on forums of late that have really got me thinking about the whole vaping hardware situation. In relation to PODs, Atomisers and Tanks etc.
There is to date a bewildering array of hardware to choose from now, if I think back to the start of my vaping journey and unbelievable amount in fact.

There is to date a bewildering array of hardware to choose from now, if I think back to the start of my vaping journey and unbelievable amount in fact.
The latest thing is PODs - there are hundreds of different ones now, they are easy, they are very pocketable and convenient. You can even get one time disposable ones now, pre-filled with a flavour, when its gone - you chuck it away.
We have seen Vaping follow this form before though several times, a new concept comes out - gets pushed by the distro’s and large vendors, that gets picked up by the Manufacturers in the east - and suddenly the market is flooded with it.
In the past, we have had the sub-ohm revolution, when suddenly it became very hard to get MTL Equipment and everywhere you went was huge clouds, we have had the Sqounk revolution where all of a sudden all drippers and atomisers suddenly came with a bottom feed pin, and Sqounk mods (some absolutely beautiful creations at the start) were suddenly produced by the thousands and flooded the market. Im not even gonna get started on CBD (which I don’t disapprove of) and its myriad of Ganja shaped leaf marketing (which I feel for an industry desperately trying to be seen as the healthier option, did the industry no favours whatsoever).
As a community I feel us vapers allow this to happen too often these days, it never used to be this way before it became big business, we the Vapers, we shaped what came to market, we shaped the industry back in those early days, and I realise I may be starting to sound a bit “When I was a Kid ., you could get three packs of woodbines and still have 50p left over for some chips….” But you know - I feel we let ourselves get pushed around by big business more than we ever used to. I would love to see a return to grass roots vaping - but clearly things have gone too far now.
But - as is my won’t - I digress, The purpose of this Blog (oh no .. am I a blogger now? Why do I feel shame?) is to dissect why I feel we should all be using Tanks or for a preference rebuildable tanks over disposable POD kits.
I do not doubt the validity of the easy to use pocketable POD system as a tool in the vapers arsenal at all, I even have one myself for travel emergencies (we even sell some for that purpose), but as a main tool ? I think we have succumbed to the hype.
There are without doubt some great little POD kits out there, and the Evolve Reflex when sat in its correct market position as a quit Smoking tool is an absolute technical and necessary marvel.
So what is my beef with POD systems ?
Lets go through it point by point - in no particular order shall we?
1: Frankly compared to even a low cost stock coil atomiser, most of them suck on flavour and performance, its not 100% true but it absolutely is for the most part, personally Ill take having a bulgier pocket and good flavour and satisfying throat hit every day of the week over something I probably have to carry a power pack around to keep using all day.
2: Im a fan of the underdog, if big companies are pushing something like this at the expense of other longer lasting items, its not because they have your convenience and best interests at heart - it’s because something has a huge profit margin.
3: Longevity - as touched on very briefly in the above point, these things do not have the last-ability of even a cheap stainless steel stock coil atomiser, never mind a well built rebuildable (which theoretically lasts forever, or for as long as you can buy cotton or wire for) on top of a half decent mod.
4: Cost - That disposable single flavour POD may have been cheap, but you gotta buy it again! That pod system with the replaceable PODS may have been a good deal .. but the Pods are a tenner for 3 when it comes to replacing time, all this for mostly less flavour - no thanks, it’s not for me. With a stock Coil Atomiser you can get better longevity and for the most part the coils are cheaper than pods. Move up to rebuildables and boom 3 quid on some Muji and 3 quid on a reel of wire (or if you really don’t want the fuss a fiver on a load of pre-made coils). And you are talking £6-£10 for about 4 years worth of vaping supplies - rebuildable REALLY are that cheap to run, and this brings me onto my final but probably biggest point.
5: Plastic landfill, the world, climate change - I mean come on, I mean how much are we hearing these days about plastic waste and landfill and climate change ? Its real, its an issue, Its bad enough our previous Euro masters (arbitrarily and with no good science behind it) forced Nic E-Liquid to be in a myriad of 10ml plastic bottles that have no use after they have been used (at least shortfill bottles and glass are reusable by the end user.) that to now have hundreds of plastic PODS and even worse Battery containing one time POD delivery devices clogging up our bins and landfill ?! This is a massive no to me, as a producer of 10ml E-liquid it breaks even my cold dead corporate heart how much plastic waste that causes, hence one of the reasons for us developing a wider range of strengths in shortfills. This alone should be a good enough reason for people to look into at least Stock Coil atomisers (the atomisers last forever .. and the waste from coils is cotton, metal and a tiny bit of rubber) - and for a preference rebuildable devices, They last forever, the waste is a tiny bit of wire and organic bio-degradable cotton, they cost about 6 quid for years and years worth of rewicking supplies, its a no brainer. Dont be pushed around.
VIVE LA REVOLUCION! - Bring back Rebuildables, think before you POD.
]]>"MTL or Mouth to lung vaping - its how vaping started, and it’s still as popular today as it ever was. There was a big blip a couple of years ago where it became very difficult to find MTL gear for awhile - during the Sub-ohm cloudy revolution, but with the advent of todays POD and AIO systems and a resurgence in MTL specific atomisers and kit, MTL is definitely here to stay."
]]>As to what is the best, well that really depends on if you are looking for Stock Coil kit (that you buy and change) or rebuildable kit (where you make your coils yourself. Also there are PODS and AIO’s et, but they are beyond the scope of this article, I may cover them at another time. As I don’t use Stock coils (although if you do I recommend the various iterations of the Nautilus atomisers - currently the Nautilus 3 - they have more than stood the test of time.) This article will be mainly about re-buildable MTL Atomizers.
In my time as a Vaper, I have written a reasonable amount of opinions, reviews and how to’s on various MTL atomisers. And as an exponent of MTL myself, have always found myself stuck on a few various pieces of kit that work well for me. Those of you who have followed my ramblings in the past on Planet Of The Vapes will know that I was for many years an big user and fan of the GP Heron - a company very sadly no longer with us, and with their fall .. went their spare o-rings … so after many years of pretty much sole using those atomisers I had to find something else.
Unfortunately .. when my Many herons all gave up the ghost was smack in the middle of the Sub-Ohm Cloudy revolution, and kit for MTL vapers was very pretty to come by - then suddenly out of nowhere Vandyvape released the Berserker, it was a good atomiser (although I always felt the name “Berserker!” was a hugely overkill name for the gentle art of MTL vaping!
I used this for awhile - but the release of the Berserker seemed to start a landslide of affordable and very usable MTL atomisers. All of a sudden there was practically a Glut - each one pretty much as good as the next.
For me personally the next step up after the berserker was the Cthulu Hastur Mini - a great little MTL Tank device with superb flavour and a drip tip that could remove teeth during a drunken vaping session.
Then the EHPRO True Tank came out .. this was a good tank - I loved it, it had the usual ability to leak randomly occasionally .. but fantastic flavour! And you could get a bubble glass which imp[roved it a lot - although not visually some would say!
After that came the Glaz Mini Atomiser - and I honestly thought affordable MTL vaping Nirvana had been reached - excellent flavour, good size tank, reasonably easy to build, leaked occasionally though .. as most are want to do.
Of course all had their niggles (and most still do - I don’t THINK as of ever there has ever been a “perfect” atomiser. The Berserker was perhaps too tight at times, The Cthulu Hastur Mini was fantastic .. but I chipped a tooth on that long drip tip, and occasionally it could be a finicky wicker as could the Glaz Mini at times.
As stated above .. when I find something that works - albeit with a few foibles (thats just a part of vaping) - I tend to stick with it and stop looking, and so it came to pass that some time last year I was introduced to the Yachtvape Pandora MTL RTA Tank. Almost perfect for my tastes this thing, the draw is absolutely superb and adjustable within true MTL parameters, not “Tight as a rats arse to Massive Air-tunnel”, just all the best bits of MTL draw, adjustable - very easy to build on and superb flavour. The only complaint I had about the atomiser, and this is a complaint about all the top fill atomisers I have ever tried, was that after top filling sometimes you got dry hits / or conversely .. floods! It was rarer than a lot of tanks though so I could live with it. Sadly unlike the Glaz Mini in its factory form - it did not have the ability to bottom fill - which cuts out a lot of dry hit / flooding options. Then wonder of wonders! Yachtvape released a Bell Cap for The Pandora MTL Atomizer - this removed the ability to top fill - and gave you the ability to bottom fill - thereby making a very very good atomiser almost Perfect for my particular tastes.
In terms of vaping hardware lifespan - the Yachtvape Pandora MTL Tank is quite old now (A YEAR!) - which sadly means in these days of fickle next big thing distro’s that it has become a hard atomiser to get hold of in the UK. The is a shame - I am still using this atomiser to this day - I have six, with the bell cap they are that good.
Until now .. that is - we are pleased to say we have a number of Yachtvape Pandora MTL Atomisers on the way in to stock in our new Hardware section, where we are trying to build up and collate a special selection of MTL kit ideal for our E-liquids.
The rumour mill is also grinding and say there will be a Yachtvape Pandora MTL Tank Atomiser V2 before the end of the year … I for one cannot wait.
Update - We now have the Digiflavor Siren V4 RTA Atomiser in stock - its proving to be a great value and easy top set up MTL Atomiser fantastic for your MTL or tobacco vape juice. And we have recently changed our pricing on the Cthulu Artemis MTL RTA to clear.
]]>The Law
Juice containing nicotine for vape devices used to come in many different sized bottles but changes in the law stopped this practice.
While the United Kingdom was in the European Union, we had to adopt the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) into our own legislation.
The TPD demanded that nicotine containing e-liquids could only be sold in 10ml bottles and had to contain a warning on the packaging. The industry had (by and large) already voluntarily adopted the practice of using child-proof caps on the bottles already.
It remained legal to supply nicotine-free eliquid in larger volume bottles. Consumers were able to buy these and then add a nicotine solution to them. The large bottles of nicotine-free e-liquid became known as “shortfills” and the nicotine solution (supplied in 10ml bottles) became known as “nic shots”.
The UK government is currently reforming the legislation now we have left the European Union. It is likely there will be changes to the law applicable to shortfill eliquids but we will not know what until sometime around November.
Are there issues with 10ml bottles?
One thing the EU failed to consider in its TPD was the impact of waste by changing how people could buy e-liquid.
Recyclable 30ml to 100ml glass bottles were replaced by millions of disposable 10ml plastic bottles. All of this plastic waste now gets deposited as landfill. Making up 100ml of 3mg e-liquid using a shortfill and 10ml nic shot bottles means throwing away two plastic bottles, two cardboard packaging and the warning leaflets contained within.
If people were allowed to buy larger volume nicotine containing bottles again it would be possible to reduce the impact on the environment again.
Shortfills for Direct To Lung Vaping
Manabush provides a range of e-liquids aimed at either the direct-to-lung (DTL) vaper or MTL Vapers – our 50ml Base Zero, Cola Divergent, and Coconut Divergent shortfills can all be used with either a 50/50 Nic Shot for MTL or a 100VG Nic Shot for DTL.
The MTL/DTL shortfills come as a 50ml shortfill that will use one nic shot to produce 3mg
We also supply a range of 30ml shortfills that contain 20ml of liquid. Adding one nic shot to these will produce a 6mg shortfill.
On top of this - in certain ranges (mainly our Tobacco Ranges) we also do a 30ml shortfill that contains 10ml of liquid and uses 2 Nic Shots to create a finished 12mg Liquid.
DTL shortfills tend to contain more Vegetable Glycerine (VG) than Propylene Glycol (PG) as VG produces bigger clouds.
Shortfills for Mouth To Lung Vaping
MTL vaping was often overlooked when it came to shortfills and so we created a range for the mouth-to-lung vaper – our 30ml shortfills.
For those looking for a 6mg e-liquid, 20ml is provided in a 30ml bottle and a single nic shot will create a 6mg shortfill.
For 12mg vapers, the 30ml bottle contains 10ml of more concentrated liquid to which the user will add two nic shots and create a 12mg shortfill.
]]>There are many different pieces of electronic cigarette equipment, and each type is geared to a different vaping style. In this article we will explain the difference between Mouth to Lung and
Direct to Lung vaping, the kind of liquids and equipment most suitable for each, and which one might be right for you.
]]>Mouth to lung, otherwise known as MTL vaping, is a way of using an e-cig that is most similar to the act of smoking.
MTL vaping involves taking small amounts of vapour into the mouth then drawing that into the lungs before exhaling. The process means that smaller, discrete clouds of vapour are formed when you breathe out.
Most often, a person places a higher strength e-liquid into their tank to compensate for the smaller amount of vape inhaled. MTL vapers also tend to take fewer draws on their device as opposed to other styles of vaping as the higher strength e-liquid means the body registers a higher level of nicotine in the blood system.
E-cigarette devices built for MTL vaping tend to have smaller and fewer airholes than other options. This makes the draw tighter and more familiar to current and ex-tobacco users.
The high nicotine level in the e-liquid combined with the familiarity of the inhale/exhale makes this a common method that smokers use to quit smoking.
The MTL vaping style isn’t exclusive to people currently quitting tobacco use, many medium- to long-term vapers continue to mouth-to-lung as they find they prefer to vape that way.
Mouth to lung vaping is also the easiest method to use if you want to vape discretely. An MTL vaper will take a short inhale and hole it for a short while. When they exhale no vapour appears. This is commonly referred to as “stealth vaping”.
What is Direct To Lung Vaping?
Direct to lung, or DTL vaping, lies at the opposite end of the spectrum to MTL vaping and is something you may have noticed people doing in public due to the volume of cloud it produces.
DTL vaping involves taking long, deep inhales from the atomiser’s drip tip. When the user exhales large clouds are formed.
Due to the nature of DTL vaping, the user will be inhaling much more e-liquid. This means a DTL vaper will tend to use a much lower strength e-liquid – typically 3mg/ml or 6mg/ml of nicotine.
DTL vaping also involves more frequent draws on the device as the volume of nicotine they are taking in is much less than that experienced when MTL vaping. Ultimately, both styles of vaping will experience the user to similar overall nicotine levels.
Electronic cigarette atomisers built for direct-to-lung vaping will have more and larger airholes compared to MTL devices to enable the large inhale. They also tend to feature drip tips (the bit you put your mouth on) that have larger inner diameters than MTL drip tips.
People who choose to vape in a DTL style tend to do so because they enjoy the feeling of the inhale and find the clouds they produce rewarding.
Some people start off with a DTL beginner kit when they try to quit smoking, but this isn’t a typical method.
Loose MTL/Restricted DTL
Some atomisers come with an adjustable airflow which means they can be used to fine tune the vaping experience.
What this means is that vapers can adjust the tightness of the draw so that a MTL vape can be looser or a DTL vape can be tighter. Sometimes the atomisers come set up for this already and are described as giving a loose MTL or restricted DTL experience.
Manabush provide a range of both MTL Eliquids and Liquids that Can be used for DTL or MTL Vaping.
Our Tobacco Eliquids are recommended for MTL tobacco lovers, and we do a range of Cola E-liquid that can be used for either MTL or DTL.
For Pure Sub Ohm DTL Enthusiasts we highly recommend the Likitless Range of E-liquids.

Whereas burning tobacco consists of thousands of toxic compounds, tar, and carbon monoxide, e-liquid is made up of just four components: vegetable glycerine (VG), propylene glycol (PG), pharmaceutical grade nicotine and quality flavourings. The solutions are placed into a tank, heated, and inhaled.
What is throat hit?
Throat hit is the sensation at the back of the mouth that replicates the sensation of smoking and is one of the reasons vaping is so successful at helping smokers ditch their tobacco habit. Most of the throat hit is created by PG liquid and the nicotine.
What is VG?
VG is a sweet tasting, clear liquid that is quite viscous (thick and sticky). It is used for many applications from cough medicine to ready-made diet meals. VG produces more cloud than PG and is used in higher concentrations in direct-to-lung, subohm juices.
What is PG?
PG is a thinner liquid without any noticeable taste or smell. It is much better as a carrier for the flavourings and is used in higher concentrations in mouth-to-lung juices. Some people can find they are slightly allergic to PG and will be recommended they switch to heavier VG e-liquids.
What is nicotine?
Nicotine is a chemical compound traditionally extracted from tobacco leaves in chemical laboratories. Scientists have recently begun processing synthetic nicotine that has never seen a leaf. Manabush uses the highest quality pharmaceutical grade nicotine in its e-liquids.
Is nicotine dangerous?
The Royal Society for Public Health has said that nicotine is “no more harmful to health than caffeine”.
Public Health England’s Kevin Fenton said: “E-cigarettes, despite appearances, are not cigarettes and do not produce smoke. It is the smoke, not the nicotine, that causes the vast bulk of the harm.”
Is vaping e-liquid harmful?
A research team led by Imperial College London’s Professor Nutt looked at and compared the relative harm from nicotine products. They found that electronic cigarettes pose less than 5% of the harm of tobacco cigarettes
What flavour e-liquid is best?
Some people like watching QI while others enjoy Coronation Street – different folks prefer different things and the same applies to tastes. When starting out with vaping the best advice is always to go for a flavour you think you will enjoy and then try some others. Most vapers end up with a wide selection of juices they enjoy vaping and a few they absolutely love.
What strength e-liquid should I buy?
Which style of vaping do you think you will be doing? Mouth-to-lung vapers tend to use high nicotine strength e-liquids with a 50/50 PG/VG mix to a 30/70 PG/VG mix. Direct-to-lung vapers use 30/70 juices to 100%VG e-liquids with 3-6mg/ml nicotine concentrations.
Many heavy smokers switching to vaping tend to find success by opting for higher nicotine concentrations. A recent study supports the anecdotal evidence and found, “nicotine concentrations greater than 20 mg/mL may be associated with increased switching among adult smokers”.
What flavourings are used?
Commercially available flavourings come in two varieties: water-based and oil-based. E-liquids only ever use water-based flavour agents, and nobody should consider using an oil-based one ever. Manabush TPD e-liquid meets all legal requirements, is registered with the MHRA, and is diacetyl-free.
Do e-liquids cause “popcorn lung”?
No. Workers in an American popcorn factory contracted an ailment termed “popcorn lung” when they breathed in a chemical compound called Diacetyl.
Diacetyl gives food products a buttery or creamy texture and used to be used in custard type vapes. The industry voluntarily stopped using flavourings containing diacetyl and then the government banned it.
Even when juice contained diacetyl it was found in levels substantially lower than that found in cigarette smoke – but not one single smoker has ever been diagnosed with “popcorn lung”.
Do e-liquids cause lung disease?
There has been no proven link between vaping and lung disease. This isn’t to say that there isn’t the potential for some harm following long-term use, but in over ten years there have been no incidents in the UK.
Was EVALI caused by vaping?
No. EVALI was a lung disease outbreak in the United States. Many still claim that it is linked to vaping – but the truth is that people were hospitalised because they were using black market, illegal cannabis liquids that contained vitamin E acetate.
Vitamin E acetate is an oil-based liquid that doesn’t mix with water-based e-liquids so it is impossible to use it with e-liquid. Oil-based solutions should never be inhaled into the lungs.
What legislation governs e-liquid in the UK?
The UK’s legislation is currently based on the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive which governs everything from the size of an e-liquid bottle to the warnings that have to be included on the packaging.
Following Brexit, the government is now conducting a review of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) and new proposals are soon to be announced (summer, 2021). Many are hoping to see the industry allowed to sell e-liquid in larger bottles and use higher concentrations of nicotine to aid smokers in quitting tobacco.
What evidence do we have to support the use of e-liquids?
